One Direction Cupcake Tutorial

Hey everyone! I successfully made One Direction cupcakes for my sisters birthday, and I thought this would be a great tutorial. There are many different options in this recipes. You can choose which one you prefer, for they all will come out pretty much the same. I will post exactly step-by-step instructions on how to create these adorable cupcakes, but because I had a time restriction when I made these, I used store bought cake mix and icing. I know...I committed a baker's sin, but even with buying the mix and icing, it still took me two hours to finish 24 cupcakes, 6 of which had the fondant decorations. Sorry for the long description, but I tried to give you a brief overview. Here are the step-by-step directions, and good luck on your cooking adventure!

Thing You Will Need:
-Cake Mix (I used Funfetti cake mix to make 24 cupcakes)
-Cupcake Pan
-24 Cupcake Holders
-Pam (if desired)
-Tablespoon
-Mixing Bowl
-Brushes
-White Powders
-Black Edible Pen
- Icing (I used 16 oz of Chocolate Fudge Icing)
-Fondant Colors: black, brown, light brown, skin tone, blonde/yellow
-Rolling pin or fondant roller
-A circle cookie cutter about the size of a cupcake
-Small Container for water
-Cupcake Hole puncher (optional)

Making of the cupcakes:
1. Buy or make your favorite cake mix and icing!
2. After making the cake mix, put your cupcake holders in the pan. (I spray my cupcake holders lightly with Pam so it is easier eat. This is optional.)
3. Put about 1-2 tablespoons of cake mix into each holder. I found the ones that turned out best for this project were the ones that were less than half-way filled.
4) Follow you mix's directions for timing on the cupcakes.
5) While cupcakes are in the oven, you can start working on your fondant faces! Because of my time restrictions I was not able to make my own fondant, so I used this pre-made fondant from a store near my house called Hobby Lobby. I will post the links for everything I bought in the "things you will need" section at the beginning of this post.
6) I had four colors of fondant: black, brown, light brown, and pink. I used a 3:1 ratio of pink to brown to make a skin tone color for the faces. You can adjust this to whatever shade you want. I also used a small amount of pure black fondant to make a topper of the One Direction logo.
7) after achieving your desired colored fondant, roll out with a roller to no less than 5 mm thickness. (repeat with smaller amount of black fondant)
8) use your cookie cutter to cut 5 circles for the faces, and cut one black circle for logo. Then put circles on a plate and put them in the refrigerator for at least 5 minutes. This helps the circles to stay stiff so they don't flop on top of your cupcake.
9)I put my 6 circles on top of a piece of aluminum foil, but you do not have to do this, you can just leave them on the plate. Next you will want to get your paint brushes and white powder. I found it easier to put a small (about dime size) of powder on the aluminum foil, and have a small container of water beside you to dip your brush in.
8) You will now paint two half circles on each face with the bottom of the circle about half-way down the circle. I found it easiest to alternate dipping your brush into the powder and the water. I wanted mine very white, so I painted multiple coats.
9) keep using this technique to paint the mouths. I only did the open mouths for Louis and Harry, but you can do this however you want.
10) you will need to let the eyes and mouth dry for at least 10 minutes before doing anything else with the faces.
11) For part of that 10 minutes, you can use your white painting technique for the One Direction logo on the black circle.
12) After 10 minutes, use your black edible paint to outline the tops of the eyes, the mouths.
13) Next, use the pen to draw their eyebrows and the rest of the mouths.
14) Use the pen to draw a circle on the white eye for the pupil. If you leave a small white dot in the middle of the pupil it makes it look more realistic.
15) Hair! Below I will list what I did for each hairstyle. (they are very similar)
Niall:
1. the color turned out darker than I wanted, but you should get a yellow to blond fondant to use.
2. Roll out fondant and cut of small slivers. Then roll these to create a round shape sausage.
3. Put water of the head of one face, and lay the small strands of fondant in a wavy like hair style.
Zayn:
1.Roll out fondant and cut of small slivers. Then roll these to create a round shape sausage.
2. Put water of the head of one face, and lay the small strands of fondant in a quiff like hairstyle.
Liam and Louis:
1.Roll out fondant and cut of small slivers. Then roll these to create a round shape sausage.
2. Put water of the head of one face, and lay the small strands of fondant in a swish like hairstyle. (look at the picture to see which way to part the hair)
Hairy:
1.Roll out fondant and cut of small slivers. Then roll these to create a round shape sausage.
2. Put water of the head of one face, and curl up one side of the sliver into a curl and lay on head. Repeat this and layer curls until you have the desired "Harry Hair."

16) I used a cupcake hole puncher to stuff the cupcakes with icing, and then lightly ice the cupcakes with desired flavor of frosting.
17) put the fondant circles on top of your cake
18) Last but not least, enjoy your cupcakes like my sister!

P.S. Tomorrow I will post a YouTube video and link on my blog with all of the photos from this adventure! If you have any questions just comment. Hope you liked it!
